Sentinel flea protectionwe
Q: We are currently using both sentinel and frontline top spot on our 2 year old shih tzu. we live in new york but expect to spend the winter months in florida starting this year. would the monthly dose of sentnel without the additional flea product be sufficient?
A: I would say if you are using the combined products with veterinarian approval, i would continue to use them in florida. flea protection should be a year round process no matter what climate you live in due to unhatched eggs present in most homes.

Cat issues! help!
Q: I have two indoor cats, b.c. (male, 1yr) and diesel (female, approx. 7 mo.). bc used to be an outdoor cat and he had fleas and an open surface wound just below the ear from scratching when we got him. i assumed he was scatching at fleas, but now, as they are below both ears and my other cat is doing the same thing- they are litterally attacking their ears, i beleive they may have ear mites. what treatment would you recommend? recently, when left in the bathroom all day accidently, bc pooed on the floor and it was a bit bloody and wormy, something i had never noticed on account of the litter. i think he got them a couple of mo. ago when he got out. we tried hartz dewormer pills on both cats, on two different occasions, and it didn't work on either cat on either occasion. again, what treatment would you recommend? my third and final question... fleas!!! i plan on getting frontline b/c it actually works, however, the apts we live in are 80yrs old and even before we got cats there were fleas via cracks in the floor boards, etc. what can i do in addition to the frontline and mgnmt's occasional exterminator visits (do those high frequency sound thingies work)? thank you very much for the advice and store! this is a god send, esp. for financially challenged college students &our poor li'l kitty meows!
A: Try mitaclear from 1800petmeds for ear mites. also for worming try nemex also given at two doses 3 weeks apart. also for flea control in house check out fleabusters who can find on line. natural and best environmental flea control

Tick eradication
Q: We have a two year old sheltie that is in the process of loosing her 2nd coat for summer. to complicate matters, she seems to have many ticks. we have seen no fleas and work at ridding the ticks with very little success. what do you recommend to help make her more comfortable. we have treated our yard with diazanon and have had a "tick alert" collar on her. in the past summers, that has been sufficient but not this year. thanks for your help. we live in southwest ok so the summers get quite hot and dry.
A: You should probably use a product such as frontline plus to help with tick control.

Fleas
Q: First question, is frontline only by prescription. i have 3 cats ages 10 and ll years. how often do you put frontline on. if frontline is by prescription only what can i use that is non prescription
A: No, frontline is over the counter. it does not require a precription. you apply frontline once a month, and it is recommended that you use the product year round.

Allergies & water
Q: We have a 4 year old border collie with hip displasia and allergies. last year we put her on frontline and she developed joint pain after the second dose. she does not seem to get fleas, but ticks are a problem. we would use a tick collar except that she frequently plunges into water on our walks, which, i gather, renders them useless. what would you suggest?
A: Take a collar like preventic collar off before she swims or you could try different product like advantix

Dosage
Q: Do i need to give my dog heartgard and frontline all year long, or can i stop when the weather gets cold?
A: Depending on where you are located you could stop during the "cold" months. you should check with your local veterinarian to see what he recommends.

1 year old dog
Q: I have a weimeraner and he is about 1yr. and 4 months old. my question is, we haven't had him very long and i do not know exactly what shots he has had or hasn't. i just had to take him to the vet for an emergency and he got his rabies and they checked for heart worms(which was neg.). i have him on heartguard and frontline and he is inside mostly. can you tell me what vaccinations i should give him? thank you so much!!
A: Suggested vaccination schedule||age schedule|5 weeks parvovirus for puppies that veterinarian considers to be at a high risk.|6 weeks and 9 weeks a combination vaccine like the 5-way and coronavirus only if it is considered aproblem.||12 weeks or older rabies vaccine: administered by your veterinarian according to the law in your area.||12 weeks and 15 weeks combination vaccine either the 5-way or the 7-way if you need to include the leptospirosis vaccine. also coronavirus and lyme when required for specific problems or locale.||adult dog combination, coronavirus and lyme as above. and rabies according to schedules and frequency determined by law and local conditions.||if boarding your animal, you should consider bordatella vaccine and parainfluenza.

Skin parasite?
Q: I brought my dog to the vet many times to no avail. he was originally infested with fleas and ticks after the shelter. is it possible that he has a sking parasite that can't be seen? i do see very tiny black dots close to his skin in a few specific areas. also, i find something tiny occassionally protruding from his skin almost like a black head except that it has two tiny black dots at the end. it seems to hurt him. any ideas? would frontline cover everything? he has a flea collar. many thanks
A: It could be a parasite which can be diagnosed by skin scrape by your vet or skin biopsy, but i suspect allergies more likely which can not only be due to fleas, but also food or inhalent allergens which need different treatment

Comparision on medications
Q: Someone else asked about the comparision of frontline plus and bio spot. the answer mentioned frontline plus being safer for whatever reason. what does that mean?
A: Any flea or tick product can cause reactions, but there seems to be more reactions to the bio spot.
