1 year old dog
Q: I have a weimeraner and he is about 1yr. and 4 months old. my question is, we haven't had him very long and i do not know exactly what shots he has had or hasn't. i just had to take him to the vet for an emergency and he got his rabies and they checked for heart worms(which was neg.). i have him on heartguard and frontline and he is inside mostly. can you tell me what vaccinations i should give him? thank you so much!!
A: Suggested vaccination schedule||age schedule|5 weeks parvovirus for puppies that veterinarian considers to be at a high risk.|6 weeks and 9 weeks a combination vaccine like the 5-way and coronavirus only if it is considered aproblem.||12 weeks or older rabies vaccine: administered by your veterinarian according to the law in your area.||12 weeks and 15 weeks combination vaccine either the 5-way or the 7-way if you need to include the leptospirosis vaccine. also coronavirus and lyme when required for specific problems or locale.||adult dog combination, coronavirus and lyme as above. and rabies according to schedules and frequency determined by law and local conditions.||if boarding your animal, you should consider bordatella vaccine and parainfluenza.

Nursing dog
Q: I read through your "ask the vet" segment and saw conflicting posts on what products are safe to use on a nursing female. are capstar or program really safe for a nursing female?
A: Capstar is approved for nursing dogs, as is frontline or frontline plus. the program tablets can be used but you should consult your veterinarian.

Safest med
Q: I haveused advantage on my cats for years. i read up on frontline plus and it seems like it would be better. wuld it be safe to suddenly switchfrom advantage to frontline? the cats are all in fairly good health.
A: There should be no problem unless your cats are allergic to an ingredient in the frontline plus.|i live in south florida and have been using frontline plus successfully for two years.

Ticks
Q: I recently moved to a heavy tick infested area.i have been using frontline plus once a month, as well as combing out my lab/spaniel several times a day and checking for ticks. still, when she wakes up in the morning sometimes i find a dead, engorged tick on her bed. a month ago she was diagnosed with lyme disease (and treated). is biospot better, as the chart claims it also repels ticks? also, is the ingredients, permethrin and pyripoxyfen, dangerous to my child, as she hugs and plays with the dog?
A: I do feel that we all get some level of insecticide exposure to all of these products when used. i think any long term issues have not been studied with these products but on short term at least are relatively safe. i would consider preventic collar which i think is best tick product on market and kills on contact

Bitting and licking his paws
Q: My dog is an indoor dog, i bathe him once a week and brush him every day he is always very clean but recently his eyes look watery and he scratches them a lot so they are very irritated as well as his paws since he keep constantly bitting and licking them. i went to the vet and he recomended benadryl for children twice a day and an antibiotic oinment for his eyes.it has been a month and he improved but the allergies still seem to be bothering him, he still scratches his nose, eyes, and sometimes he licks the carpet or anything around the house like if he had itchy tongue. please advise me any other medice that might help. i also need to re-order frontline plus so i'll wait for your answer to proceed w/my order. (he is an 10 months maltese)thank you.
A: You can try prozyme as well as derm caps added to his food which might help when they are used long term. you might need other stronger antihistamines. consider trying chlorphenirmine from 1800petmeds at dose of 1 mg twice daily. if persists, then best to do allergy test for inhalent allergies through blood or skin test as this is common in this breed and best to formulate allergy vaccine for best long term relief. also might want to try low allergy diet like wellness fish and potato or purina ha from your vet

Flea treatment for feral cats
Q: I am caring for four feral cats, all females. they have become fairly friendly to the point i could treat them for fleas. how much should i buy for these cats? three are a year old and weigh maybe 5 pounds and the mother of the three is probably two years old and weighs 7 pounds. they are living outdoors year round but we provide shelter for them in bad weather.
A: You can purchase frontline plus for cats. that product is suitable for each of your cats. we recommend applying it once a month.
