Heartworm screening
Q: I was told by my vet that before administering a heartworm med such as heartguard or frontline plus a stool specimen is required to be sure no heartworm infection already exists because the meds would kill a dog that is already infected. i have found nothing to support that statement online with the exception that another med is needed to actually kill existing heartworms. could you please clarify this?
A: Because of the circulating microfilarea if a heartworm preventative is given to a heartworm positive animal there can be serious, sometimes fatal, consequences. that is why heartworm tests are performed before beginning heartworm therapy. stool samples are used to determine if there are any other worms such as roundworm, hookworm or whipworm present.

Heartworm/ flea & tick protection
Q: Lately i've heard a lot about frontline, k-9 and other such products including heartworm prevention products. starting with the long term effects with using some of these products. (causing seizures and kidney problems) could you please comment on such products and the health effect of using these product. please talk from a medical stand point not a advertising point. thank you for your time.
A: Any product including heartworm preventative or any of the insectisides for flea/tick contol can occasionallly cause side effectd in suscsepible allergic individuals. unfortunately, there is often not alot of data on long term effects many animals, but most seem o do fine

Bitting and licking his paws
Q: My dog is an indoor dog, i bathe him once a week and brush him every day he is always very clean but recently his eyes look watery and he scratches them a lot so they are very irritated as well as his paws since he keep constantly bitting and licking them. i went to the vet and he recomended benadryl for children twice a day and an antibiotic oinment for his eyes.it has been a month and he improved but the allergies still seem to be bothering him, he still scratches his nose, eyes, and sometimes he licks the carpet or anything around the house like if he had itchy tongue. please advise me any other medice that might help. i also need to re-order frontline plus so i'll wait for your answer to proceed w/my order. (he is an 10 months maltese)thank you.
A: You can try prozyme as well as derm caps added to his food which might help when they are used long term. you might need other stronger antihistamines. consider trying chlorphenirmine from 1800petmeds at dose of 1 mg twice daily. if persists, then best to do allergy test for inhalent allergies through blood or skin test as this is common in this breed and best to formulate allergy vaccine for best long term relief. also might want to try low allergy diet like wellness fish and potato or purina ha from your vet

Q: Should i be using advantage or frontline for my 15 lb. indoor/outdoor cat? he goes through wooded areas. thanks.
A: The choice between advantage or frontline plus is difficult to make. i suggest using the product you have had past successes with, or check with a neighbor to see what they are using successfully.
